On Wednesday, President Obama unveiled a new proposal to provide funding to school districts that want to hire additional police or counselors. Research suggests that there are many dangers in having police in schools and most of these involve exacerbating the school-to-prison pipeline. We are well acquainted with these dangers in Chicago Public Schools.
Please join us on Thursday, January 24th to discuss the President’s proposal and to learn about how you can get involved to advocate for alternatives to more police in our schools. This teach-in will feature students, parents, and advocates who will share their experiences and ideas. Organizations & groups represented on the panel include: Blocks Together, Circles & Ciphers, Chicago Freedom School (CFS), Community Organizing and Family Issues (COFI), Project NIA, Teachers for Social Justice (TSJ), Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE).
We hope to leave this event with a strategy for action.
